Don’t Sabotage Your Own Resume!

Even though I am not officially in the resume writing business, I have written many of them over the years, for many different people, in many different job search and application situations. In fact, earlier this week someone contacted me for a resume price quote.

In most cases, when someone contacts me they already have a draft resume, or a previous version, that they want me to fix or rewrite. When I review these documents I am often amazed by the way people tend to self-sabotage when it comes to writing their resume or c.v. Here’s how they do it…

People ask me to write their resume on a regular basis. Almost every time, when I review their “draft” or “old” resume or cv, I find the following problems:

  • It is almost always too long.
  • It doesn’t focus enough on what you can do for the new employer “today”, in the job at hand.
  • It tends to give equal weight to “ancient history” with not enough emphasis on recent experience.
  • It does not focus enough on actual results achieved in the various job experiences described.
  • It does not make a clear statement as to what the applicant is looking for job-wise and career-wise.

To help people deal with these deficiencies more effectively, I recently reviewed and updated each of the resume writing pages on my Writing Help Central Website. There are now five separate “themed” pages that focus on different aspects of resume writing, as follows:
